This 1-year ACGME-accredited program offers training in diagnostic exfoliative cytopathology and fine needle aspiration. Upon completion fellows are board-eligible in Cytopathology and capable of practicing in both academic and private practice settings. Activities are centered at Emory University Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, and The Emory Clinic where fellows are exposed to a wide range of cytology material. The combined annual volume of cytology specimens between these sites is over 40,000, including 25,000 gynecologic cytology specimens and 15,000 non-gynecologic specimens, more than 4,000 of which are fine needle aspirations of superficial and deep lesions. Fellows train with eleven board-certified and highly experienced faculty and develop increasingly independent diagnostic abilities, including performing and interpreting fine needle aspirations. Fellows also plan and participate in intradepartmental and interdepartmental conferences and instruct pathology residents and medical students. Resources available for clinical and translational research include faculty with expertise in multiple subspecialties and trainee access to laboratory facilities, immunocytochemistry, flow and image cytometry and molecular diagnostics.
