Forensic Pathology

This 1-year fellowship provides practical competency in forensic pathology and the necessary experience to meet the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Training is under the direction of Dr. Jan Gorniak and is based at the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Center, which includes a full-time staff of four board-certified forensic pathologists and 11 investigators. The Medical Examiner's Office investigates approximately 2,700 deaths per year, including approximately 200 homicides, 100 suicides, 350 accidental deaths, and 150 traffic fatalities. Each year, the medical examiner's staff conducts approximately 1100 autopsies, 500 external exams, and 1000 scene investigations. A forensic pathology fellow performs approximately 250 autopsies per year and participates in approximately 75 scene investigations. Adequate staff and teaching material are available to facilitate education without undue or excessive caseload and service work. Rotations at the Georgia Division of Forensic Sciences Crime Lab provide experience in toxicology and other forensic disciplines. Fellows have access to in-house photography, computers, to nearby Grady Memorial Hospital and its library, histology, and conferences.
