Hematopathology

Description

The Hematopathology Fellowship Program at Emory University School of Medicine is an academically-oriented one-year program emphasizing clinical experience and research activity. The year incorporates rotations in morphologic evaluation of blood and bone marrow, lymph node, and extranodal tissues, flow cytometric and immunohistochemical immunophenotyping, cytogenetics/FISH and molecular diagnostics, hemoglobinopathies, coagulation, and laboratory management, as well as elective time for research projects. Aggregate annual volumes at our adult and pediatric facilities include approximately 3,500 cases for morphologic assessment, 4,000 cases for flow cytometric immunophenotyping, and 3,500 cases for cytogenetic and molecular diagnostics evaluation. Busy hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and fine needle aspiration services ensure variety and growth of the workload. Training emphasizes interpretation and integration of the spectrum of diagnostic testing in hematopathology. Fellows assume graduated clinical service responsibilities and participate in tumor boards and teaching residents, medical students, and laboratory staff.
