Medical Microbiology

This one-year ACGME-accredited program is designed to train academically oriented pathologists and infectious disease specialist for a career in clinical microbiology. The fellows rotate through the clinical microbiology laboratories serving Emory University, Emory University Hospital Midtown, and Grady Memorial Hospitals (approximately 2,000 beds and 500,000 microbiology procedures/year). The trainees gain hands-on experience in all aspects of clinical microbiology including bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and serology through a series of structured bench rotations. The fellow gains administrative experience through participation in laboratory management and hospital committee meetings and assumes increasing responsibility for interactions with clinicians, test interpretations, and presentations at conferences as the training progresses. A one-month rotation on the clinical infectious disease service and rounds with infection control practitioners provide training in these areas. Ample opportunity exists for interaction with the nearby Centers for Disease Control. The fellows will participate in test development and evaluation as well as applied clinical research.
