    Residency Program

    Anatomic Pathology

Our program provides residents with broad-based experiential training in all aspects of diagnostic pathology supplemented by a core of didactic lectures, structured teaching conferences, and ample elective time for specialty training and research. The anatomic pathology program can be completed as a combined AP/CP program over 4 years or as a dedicated AP program over 3 years. Rotations in surgical pathology, cytopathology, and autopsy-forensic sciences in a variety of locations provide an unsurpassed wealth of material and experiences during residency. Teaching is carried out by over 25 full-time faculty several of whom are listed among Best Doctors in America. In addition, the division enjoys national and international prominence in several specialty areas including soft tissue, urologic, dermatologic and hematologic pathology. Throughout our program we emphasize graduated responsibilities with senior residents playing an integral role in the supervision of junior residents. Our fifth year, offering a rich selection of structured specialty training experiences (e.g. surgical pathology fellowship), is an ideal way for residents to acquire the self confidence and self distinction that makes them so competitive in today’s job market.

Diagnostic case signouts represent the cornerstone of the anatomic pathology rotations. These are conducted exclusively by faculty interacting directly with residents around multi-headed microscopes in recently renovated state of the art signout suites. An integral part of the anatomic pathology program is the newly created core lecture series offered once weekly which presents, over a three year period, all topics in anatomic pathology. Aimed at practical issues this sequence begins with tissue processing and tissue artifacts, progresses to organ specific pathology, and concludes with laboratory management and administration. Lectures are given by Emory faculty and selected outside guest faculty. Weekly teaching conferences supplement the lecture series through a problem-based approach. These include the daily QA/QC conference at which all problematic cases are reviewed at the surgical pathology unknown conference. The core experience in anatomic pathology is enriched by weekly attendance and participation in the departmental Pathobiology Conference designed to introduce and update residents in the molecular principles underlying various disease states. Residents are also in attendance at Emory’s bimonthly interinstitutional evening slide seminar and the annual Emory Anatomic Pathology (CME) course entitled, “Diagnostic Problems in Surgical Pathology” which attracts pathologists from all over the Southeast.

In addition to the strength of our structured anatomic pathology program, our faculty takes pride in the quantity and quality of our interactions with our housestaff. We encourage them to seek us out whether to obtain assistance with a case, solicit guidance in finding a future position, or exchange ideas informally. Residents are our junior colleagues, and their accomplishments are also ours. Our goal has always been to “train pathologists who will make a difference”, and we know they will represent us well whether they choose a career path in academic medicine or community practice.
