    Application Procedures

    Selection of Housestaff
Our selection of Housestaff is made using academic records, ability, overall preparedness, communication skills, aptitude, personal qualities (motivation, integrity, and the ability to work with others), personal statement, letters of recommendation, and personal interviews. This policy is intended to establish fair criteria for the screening of applicants and appointment to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Educational Programs.

    Postgraduate Year One (PGY-1)
For the first year of postgraduate training, the Emory University School of Medicine training programs participate in the NRMP through ERAS. To apply for a PGY-1 position, visit the ERAS website for instructions and requirements.

*Please note that the applications through ERAS will be accepted up to November 30th for review and evaluation for an interview. However, because of the volume of applications the department receives, applications received after that date will be reviewed and considered for an interview if the schedule allows. It is the student's best interest to see that his/her application, transcript and letters of recommendation are sent as early as possible. We schedule interviews beginning in September through early January.

Interviews are by invitation. PGY-1 appointments will be confirmed in accordance with the NRMP, and the University will issue Letters of Agreement promptly

    Postgraduate Year Two and Above

Requirements that must be met and support materials that must be received before the applicant's file is considered complete are:

     · Complete application form. This requires Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing and printing.
     · Dean's letter
     · Medical School Diploma
     · USMLE Scores Step 1, Step 2 - Copy of Medical License, if applicable
     · Above the training level of PGY-3, a copy of USMLE Step 3 must be included
     · Letters of recommendation (3): One from the Program Director; two from Pathology Faculty. These letters should refer to the applicant's term of service and contain a statement regarding his/her performance and ability in pathology. If in military service, a letter from the Commanding Officer should be sent to the Program Director in which the applicant's personal and professional qualifications are evaluated.

Application Procedures for Foreign Medical Graduates

    Postgraduate Year One (PGY-1):

When submitting your application to the Department of Pathology, please follow the requirements for PGY-1 applicants through ERAS and also include a copy of your Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Interim Certificate or Standard Certificate, your USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 scores and CSA Certification.

Please be aware that the notification from ECFMG of your passing test scores is not sufficient. In addition to passing the test you must have verification of an unrestricted license to practice medicine in your home country before ECFMG will issue an Interim or Standard Certificate.

Your application can be considered while ECFMG certification is pending, but under no circumstances will final appointment be made until the Training Program Director is in receipt of a copy of your Interim or Standard Certificate.

As in the case of LCME/American Graduates, you must participate in the NRMP through ERAS. Otherwise, your application cannot be considered until after the matching is completed in March. We suggest that medical associates in the United States should write letters of recommendation for you. Because of the large number of medical students applying to our PGY-1 programs, a personal interview is required for ranking.

    Postgraduate Year Two and Above

Each foreign graduate is required to submit a copy of his/her ECFMG Standard Certificate. Since postgraduate training outside the United States is not recognized, letters of recommendation should come from the Program Director from each U.S. Hospital where the applicant has trained. These letters should refer to the applicant's term of service and contain a statement regarding his/her performance and ability in pathology.

    University Benefits

Annual stipends for Housestaff are in accordance with the compensation schedule that is in effect on July 1 of the year for which the resident is appointed and will be discussed at the time of the interview.

All full-time housestaff receive up to 20 calendar days of compensation leave per year: 15 vacation; 5 professional leave to attend conferences. Full time housestaff may have up to 12 days of sick leave with pay during the one-year contract period. This leave can be used for personal illness, disability, or injury, including disability due to delivery, medical, dental, or optical appointments. Family Leave is also available after one year. Certain benefits also apply to those with spouse, children, and domestic partner. Additional benefits include labcoats/scrubs, email address, parking, pager, library privileges, and direct deposit of stipend checks. Professional liability coverage is provided at no cost for housestaff who are working in the Emory University Affiliated Hospitals under the auspices of the training program. Departmental benefits will be discussed at time of interview.
